Your Home Floral Style

Posted by Bloomtastic Florists on Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Every home has a style, it’s very own personality that needs to be showcased!  Indulge your home’s persona  by tailoring the flower arrangements to suit.  Below are five home styles and the perfect arrangements for each.

Americana Country

(Image from Society of American Florists)

This style has become a phenomenon in it’s own right. Motifs include artifacts from the past - such as quilts, galvanized metal bowls and wooden crates. The result is comfort that is easy and inviting. Woven baskets or simple vases of mixed spring flowers (yarrow, wild roses, scabiosa, heather) fit perfectly on a coffee table or kitchen counter. Cut flowers, blooming plants, herbs, wreaths and swags with that farm-fresh look are a natural extension of this homespun décor with their fresh-picked-from-the-garden appeal.

Casual Chic

(Image from Society of American Florists)

Casual living lifestyles focus on the simple pleasures of life. The decor includes furniture of light pine, natural woods, bleached oak or a white-washed painted finish with fabrics of linen and cotton in neutral tones. Because these homes are designed for "stress busting," flowers provide nature's balancing formula. The right match might include flowering and green plants (like cyclamen, kalanchoe, pothos or ivy) casually grouped, or flowers (such as sunflowers, daisies, hydrangea, delphinium or tulips) placed in a clear glass vase, pitcher or piece of pottery.

 Traditional

(Image from Society of American Florists)

This home has formal architecture with impressive front doors, foyers and individually decorated rooms. Design elements include classic furnishings and antiques with elegant fabrics of brocade, silk and tapestry. Traditional arrangements call for a mixture of flowers (roses, gladiola, iris, carnations, lilies or snapdragons, to name a few) and accents such as dried fruit and foliage. Crystal, brass, silver or porcelain containers are ideal for the classic floral centerpiece.

Modern

(Image from Society of American Florists)

Sleek and trendy, the modern home calls for clean lines, smooth surfaces and form. Elegant fabrics, colorful silks, gauze or leather accent steel, glass and other man-made materials. Bold, exotic flowers (anthuriums, heliconia, callas, orchids) with strong lines work well to complement this home's clean, open spaces. To complete the dramatic look, flowers are best displayed in glass vases, decorative pottery and metallic containers with pewter or stainless steel finishes.

Victorian

(Image from Society of American Florists)

Velvets, satins, chintz, lace and organza create a feeling of softness and romance in the Victorian home. Pastel colors or soft tone-on-tone prints are used to delight the senses. Fragrant flowers (roses, spray roses, peonies, lavender, gardenias, freesia) in pale peach, lavender, pink, yellow and cream conjure images of romance and sensuality. All of these delicious colors glow in lovely, romantic vases of clear glass, crystal and silver.

A Touch of Earth

Posted by CR on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Anchorware Everywhere

A Touch of Earth is a place of calm amidst the bustling North Market. A place where you can pull up a stool, set down your bags and flowers and have a cup of coffee or two. It is neighbor to Pastaria Seconda and Market Blooms. Not only do they sell coffee but teas and candies as well.

Why do we love A Touch of Earth so much? Well everything we had there was delicious, but they also keep all sorts of goodies in our Glass Stackables!  Perfect for them because you can see the contents and they have BPA free seals.

Books & Brew

Posted by CR on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Anchor Hocking manufacturers and distributes a wide variety of barware.  With the current incline in American made craft beers, we thought what better place to study than where it's made?

Recently, I had the chance to visit Boston to meet with a customer, but also do some study on the culture that surrounds the city. In the near future I'll post some interesting information about American craft beers and their gaining popularity even in a down economy, but until then enjoy these images from the city of books and brews.

What makes us like her events so very much? She uses Anchor Hocking Heritage Hill Jars! See those beauties? Imagine the dessert tables one could create with a bunch of those!

Old School Anchor

Posted by CR on Friday, June 25th, 2010

AK and I found some pretty wonderful images of past Anchor Hocking employess, and this is one of our favorites. What a group! Based on the people in the image and their position in the company at the time, and the Mayor of Lancaster, we think this picture was taken in 1936.

(Left to Right) President of the Lancaster Twilight Baseball League, T.C. Fulton (then V.P. Anchor Hocking Glass Corp), W.V. Fisher (then V.P. Anchor Hocking Glass Corp (also, baseball team general manager)), J.W. Huddle (then Mayor of Lancaster), and I.J. Collins (then President of Anchor Hocking Glass Corp).

We hope you've enjoyed this Anchor flashback!

This one is quite possibly our favorite vintage Anchor find. We just love the styling of this graphic poster for Fire-King. Maybe we should bring her back!  Everyone loves a hint of retro whimsy.

Loving the bakeware in that cute poster? You can still buy it today! Anchor brought back the design recently and renamed it Reflections. Be sure to check it out along with our other wonderful bakeware!

Getting Celebrated

Posted by CR on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The Ohio Glass Museum is located here in Lancaster, Ohio. Since 2002 they have been celebrating Ohio's tradition of producing both handmade and machine made glassware. They share the history of of glassware and the roll that Ohioans have played in its growth.

On May 15th an exhibit opened featuring Anchor Hocking and showcasing Gay Fad Studios. I attended the opening evening's event. Here I met former employees of Anchor Hocking, viewed portraits of I.J. Collins and other crucial leaders from the past and saw the very first sales record book dating back to 1905. The group from The Ohio Glass Museum did an excellent job collecting data, images and archival pieces of Anchorware.

"The exhibit will feature Anchor Hocking items from the morgue of the Anchor Hocking; collections of Verylene Summers, of the Summer House Antiques; our own museum archives; and a very few area collectors. These glass creations and other artifacts will tell the great story of Anchor Hocking's positive incluence on, and enormous contribution to, our community for the past 105 years." -- The Ohio Glass Museum

The show also displayed pieces of Gay Fad glassware, which is also from Lancaster, Ohio.

"Fran Taylor decorated wastebaskets and glass items in Detroit beginning in 1939. She moved her business to Lancaster in 1945 so it would be central to the glass industry. For the next 18 years Gay Fad Studios was one of the best known and most prolific glass decorating companies in the country. A large selection of items from Gay Fad historian and collector, Dr. Donna McGrady, of Indiana, will be featured in this exhibit, along with contributions of area collectors." -- The Ohio Glass Museum

Scooped Up in Artistry

Anchorware Everywhere

While out and about in the Short North area of Downtown Columbus I stumbled upon some wonderful creations in Collier West. As usual Suzi West has presented an extraodinary display of collections and art objects to dazzle the eye.

This time I saw something that was most definitely Anchor Blog material. A female metal artist, Jan Barboglio, has a captivating assortment of creations. One of which is a casserole holder which comes with a piece of Anchorware. Barboglio's holder can be snagged for a mere $148.00, but is well worth it for the metal art enthusiast.

Make sure and check out all of the pieces that Collier West has to offer this weekend at the June gallery hop, or online at www.collierwest.com.

Quench Your Thirst

Posted by CR on Friday, May 28th, 2010

I can't believe I've forgotten to share this for so long! It's been almost a month now since I stopped by one of my favorite places at The North Market, in downtown Columbus. I stopped by Bubbles Tea & Juice Company for the first time in quite a while and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have boat loads of Anchorware on display!

I was really at The North Market to pick up fresh flowers, but Bubbles Tea & Juice Company's tasty samples lured me in. In case you're wondering I wound up buying a delicious mango smoothie concoction.

The thing I love most about this place is the way they seal your cup. They use a special sealing process and provide a straw with a pointed end. You stab the plastic lid and you're on your way. This is perfect for The North Market shopper who is in a hurry or has their hands full.

Bubble Tea & Juice stores their ingredients in our Stackable Storage Jars with metal lids. They put a little placard on the front of each for contents description. They keep their look consistant and organized and have a fantastic BPA free sealing lid!

So if you're ever in Columbus, Ohio, make sure Bubbles Tea & Juice is one of your stops while exploring the downtown scene!
