Flowers:

We went to the local grocer and purchased a potted hyacinth plant, which contained 3 bulbs that had bloomed ($7.00) and a bouquet of mixed spring stems ($7.00).

Project 1
Bouquets for Ladies Tea

Take time to relax and catch up with close friends this spring. Invite over your closest friends, your siblings, your in-laws, whoever – and make them feel right welcomed and cherished with a personalized bouquet.

We wanted these bouquets to be multi-purpose so we grabbed our 1 Liter Carafes to hold the stems.

We also found some ribbon (reused from a potpourri bag) to hold name tags on to the vases. The name tags were cut out of brown paper bags (which were free from the grocer’s check-out).

To make the tags we first sketched out a tag shape (download a printable tag of your own here). We cut through both sides of the bag, giving us two tag shapes each. We did this so we could write little notes on the inside of the tag. Write their names on the outside and a cute note on the inside, hole punch and attach to the carafe.

Project 2
Rustic Charm

We chose a collection of 4 bud vases in various heights. We picked out three rather tall stems from the bouquet and one that was shorter and fuller.

For the fuller stem we needed to remove some of the lower leaves and growth, but saved them for another small project.

By using an earthy color palette and not following standard floral arrangement rules, we create an interesting, minimal and rustic look. This would look great next to a tub full of sodas in glass bottles or a buffet table of desserts.

Project 3
Big Charm in Small Places

If you have minimal counter space and you still want to add pops of nature to the display this idea is for you.

We have been saving used candle jars for just such an occasion. Remember those trimmings we saved from Project 2? Here’s where they’ll come in handy. Using short stems of filler and leaves and rocks, create small vignettes in miniature jars. These will look perfect among food displays or next to beverage stations. Inter-mix them with candles for a romantic effect.

Project 4
Lofty Sunnies

Sunflowers can make a big impact with their height. Don’t worry though, if you don’t have a tall vase to put them in. We chose 3 pieces of tall and skinny beverageware, our Soho Collection. You could also use our 4” or 6” Kendl Tapered Vases.

We used what is called “cullet” from our factory, but you can pick up a similar looking product in the floral section. You could also use tiny seed beads from the craft isle.

First, we filled the glasses/vases with the filler/cullet.
Then, we pushed the sunflower stems down into the material. This makes a snug fit around the flower and holds it upright.

Align them down the center of a table or on a shelf for a modern touch and new sense of visual height.

Project 5
Ditch the Plastic

We bought those hyacinths, remember? We decided we didn’t like that pot they were in, and we weren’t ready to plant them in the garden just yet. So, we temporarily transplanted them into pieces of beverageware that we’ve been collecting.

Maybe you have some collections of vintage glassware or some pieces that no longer have match. Use these pieces of glass to create an interesting display that kicks those hyacinths up a notch.

Display them while you have guests over and after the party you can plant them in the ground.

**Don’t forget, that once the flowers turn brown, you can dig up that bulb, store it in a brown paper bag and replant next year.

Project 6
Housewarming Gift

Do you know someone who just settled into their new home?
Maybe a newlywed couple?

Instead of flowers, opt for kitchen gadgetry!

Whether they’ve registered for gifts or you know what they’re in need of, use a collection of items to create a lovely display.

Vase too tall? Purchase some fabric napkins in their favorite color(s), roll them up and use as a base for you gadget bouquet.

I am a young married person, who rarely finds time to cook. My cupboard somtimes contains the staples for baking needs and seasoning. I always keep things like Ramen Noodles and PB & J supplies handy.

When I do actually try to cook, I try to make things too complicated, in an endless attempt to impress the guests. Sometimes, this concept flops leaving me to call the nearest takeout restaraunt availble.

While talking to a friend about favorite dishes, I came to a realization last weekend. I have never made a meatloaf.

The meatloaf seems to be a food that almost every woman in my family makes. It makes many servings so you can reheat it all week. Meatloaf tastes great left over, and you can put just about anything in it. So with all of these positive things to say about meatloaf, why haven't I baked one?

So let's solve this problem of being meatloafless, shall we?

Step 1: Get a glass loaf dish (Glass bakes evenly, food doesn't tend to stick to it, and heck - it allows you to take great pictures of your food).

Step 2: Get a recipe. I sent a tweet to one of our favorite food writers, Cynthia O'Connor O'Hara, The Harried Housewife (she does on-air cooking spots and a column for NBC-WKTV News Channel 2 - Utica, NY).

Step 3: Take inventory of the kitchen, then go to the grocery to buy everything because your kitchen cupboard is looking like a desert island.

Step 4: MAKE IT.

*Wash those hands!

*Preheat that oven to 350 degrees farenheit guys and gals! (FYI: Anchor Hocking bakeware can be used in ovens up to 425)

*In a large bowl, combine ground beef, pork, bread crumbs, onion, milk, eggs, salt, pepper, and parsley.

*Mix well. I of course always use glass mixing bowls. Always use a non-metal mixing utensil, or your hands. I went for the hand option, because my mother told me to. I would like to put it on the record that "I regret this 'hand mixing' experience entirely."

I used our Square Serving Bowl but we also have Round Mixing Bowls on the online store.

*Pat the mixture into your loaf pan. Don't be afraid of smushing it into those corners, glass bakes very evenly.

*WASH YOUR HANDS AGAIN.

*Pop that beatiful meatloaf into the oven for 45 minutes (should be preheated to 350 by now).

*Get to making the tangy sauce for the top! Mix your ketchup, mustard and brown sugar together.

I made the sauce in one of our 7-Cup Round Storage Bowls. This product comes in handy a lot when you have some down time in cooking. Just throw on the lid and even refrigerate or freeze if need be.

*When your 45 minutes are up put a soft pot holder, silicon trivet or towels out on the counter.

*Put the meatloaf dish onto your soft, dry surface.

*Pour the sauce you created onto the top.

*Return the dish to the oven for about 15 more minutes.

*YOU'RE DONE!

Serve up your beautiful meatloaf, it should make about 8 servings. I served myself, my husband and my best friend, then put the rest into little Anchor Hocking glass storage containers for lunches and dinners.

He was welcomed in our showroom, where Channel 10 News asked him questions, and a local newpaper photographer snapped shots of the event.

Brown then went on a tour of our factory with our President, Mark Eichhorn as well as our CFO, Mark Hedstrom.

On his way through Plant 1, factory team members were all smiles to see the Senator in their historic factory.

Senator Sherrod Brown not only learned about glass making, but also glass decorating. Here, Eichhorn shows Brown one of our most popular and time tested pieces, the Fire King Measuring Cup.

The Senator is quite proud of Ohio's rich manufacturing history, and was thrilled to hear that we've managed to keep our main plant in the same location since our origination in 1905.

Here at Anchor Hocking, we are always so inspired by the beautiful parties and decorations and goodies that our friends online are coming up with! We wanted to try our hand at creating a fun 4th of July gathering - chic and cheap.

Wondering what all we used to create this swanky little get together?
Well all of the glassware is, of course, Anchor Hocking Company. The balloons were around 5 dollars from Party City, the beautiful red Gerber Daisies were also around 5 dollars from Kroger, and the vases were old wine bottles with the labels taken off.

What did we use as a table? Well that is a fantastic vintage trunk that this little blogger got for a steal at a local antique store, The Olde Shoe Factory Antique Mall. It was just our luck that it was blue and big enough to house all of the glassware and goodies!

My my! What is in that triffle bowl?
Layers of vanilla wafers, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and whipped cream (original style).

That adorable Montana Jar (64 oz) is full of Strawberry Soda! You could jazz it up with a little prosecco or champagne too!

We couldn't forget the cherry pie!
We also chose our fine Stölzle champagne flutes for an Independence Day toast! You ought to hear those babies ring!

Inside our 4-in-1 cake dome is a double layer chocolate cake with tons of decadent frosting, whipped cream and fruit decorations!

Anchor Hocking always looks forward to this time of year! It's such a great opportunity to give to a wonderful cause as a business family.

We thought we'd give you an inside peek at our race shirts for the 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (Columbus, Ohio).

The race is Saturday May 14th, and we'll have a team of 129 there.

We attended presentations on trend, eco-friendly design, and the ever growing world of technology. One of the biggest excitements of the IHA Show is watching it grow every year. Last year there was the addition of the twitter feed wall, which continued this year. The conversation was had by including #housewares in your tweets. This year we also saw several booths and printed materials making good use of QR Codes. QR Codes allow you to scan a bar code with your smart phone, which then takes you to an app or a website. This is an excellent marketing opportunity which we intend on seeing more and more in the houswewares marketplace.

So as you can imagine, this evening was quite the exciting opportunity, a quiet event, in a private cellar, with a wine maker from Italy! Who wouldn’t jump to positively RSVP? What else was so wonderful you ask? Well, each tasting was poured into a beautiful piece of Stölzle stemware!

I was so thrilled with the wines and the vast knowledge that was bestowed upon us, that I’ve decided to type up all of my notes and share them with you here on the Anchor Blog! Maybe my notes will inspire you to pick up a bottle and cook up some culinary delights to pair with it.

Our tasting was complete with hearty pours and fantastic hors d'oeuvres created by Europia’s Proprietor, Steven Grabner.

TASTING NOTES:

TREBBIANO D’ABRUZZO
“DAMA”

This stunning Trebbiano d’Abruzzo just arrived in the United States last week. It is a 2010 Vintage and is aged in vessels and bottles for 3 months.

Not only does it have a full floral and perfectly fruity flavor, it has a powerfully elegant bouquet and impressive legs.

This wine would be a beautiful pairing with white meats and fish. Certainly, this is an excellent choice to pair with summer flavors.

Grape Varietal: 100% Trebbiano d’Abruzzo
Alcohol Content: 12%
Production: 50,000 bottles/ 6 per case/ carton
Size: 750 ml
Serving Temp: 54-56° F

PECORINO

This 2009 vintage is tropical and harmonious. It has excellent floral flavors, structure and balance. Spicy nuances are also evident among the mango, melon and grapefruit fragrances. The bouquet on this Pecorino is much lighter than that of the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

This golden beauty is aged in steel tanks and in bottles for 4 months.

For a pairing, fish and white meats would be fitting. Salami, pasta, or truffles would be dreamy compliments. Another striking union would be with seared sea scallops and a creamy risotto.

Grape Varietal: 100% Pecorino
Alcohol Content: 13%
Production: 30,000 bottles/ 6 per case/ carton
Size: 750 ml
Serving Temp: 52-54° F

MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO
CERASUOLO “DAMA”

The beautiful cherry color of this wine comes from vintification process. The contact between the skin and the juice of the red grapes is quite brief, only 24 hours, allowing only a slight tinge of red color. It is aged in vessels and bottle for about 3 months.

This light yet crisp wine has a fresh bouquet, and admirable legs. Its taste is round, dry and pleasant.

While one could drink rosé with anything, this Montepulciano would be incredible with gazpacho, pizza, vegetable soups, and tomato based dishes. Artichoke creations would also be well served with this wine.

*Side note: Artichoke has a chemical that makes it quite difficult to pair with wine and often creates a taste of tin. Surprisingly, this wine manages to balance its flavors out.

Grape Varietal: 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
Alcohol Content: 13%
Production: 40,000 bottles/ 6 per case/ carton
Size: 750 ml
Serving Temp: 54-56° F

MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO
“INFERI”

This wine is bread of indigenous grapes and aged in French and Slavonian oak barrels for 14-18 months, it then continues to mature and refine in the bottle for 6 months. The color of Inferi is a deep ruby red.

The bouquet is rich and warm. Fragrances of vanilla, tobacco and licorice are intensely evident.

This 2007 vintage not only boasts an artful label, but a powerful flavor that would be perfect with pasta, mushrooms, beef or mature cheeses.

Grape Varietal: 100% Montepulciano
Alcohol Content: 14%
Production: 100,000 bottles/ 6 per case/ carton
Size: 750 ml and 1.5 liter
Serving Temp: 60-65° F

MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO
“DAMA”

This incredible ruby red Dama has a vibrant bouquet with fragrant hints of licorice. It is an easy, drinkable wine with unbelievable fruit flavors and perfect acidity. It has a subtle spice and good balance.

There is almost no oak flavor to this wine, making it a pleasure to drink with any plate. Its distinct flavor is attributed to the process of 12 month aging in steel, followed by 6 months in 2nd and 3rd use barrels.

*Side note: Each vintage is different, because of the 2nd and 3rd use barrel process. The fruit flavors begin to change because the oak barrels pull out the acidity of the wine; this varies by year based on the 1st use of the barrel.

Grape Varietal: 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
Alcohol Content: 13.5%
Production: 6 per case/ carton
Size: 750 ml
Serving Temp: 66-67° F

We wanted to share a rather fun and energetic trend that has taken over. This trend has many offshoots, but begins with plaid.

I think I even used the glass pumpkin in a Halloween party spooky display, making it look like there were body part or eyeballs floating in the jar. This style has become a phenomenon in it’s own right. Motifs include artifacts from the past - such as quilts, galvanized metal bowls and wooden crates. The result is comfort that is easy and inviting. Woven baskets or simple vases of mixed spring flowers (yarrow, wild roses, scabiosa, heather) fit perfectly on a coffee table or kitchen counter. Cut flowers, blooming plants, herbs, wreaths and swags with that farm-fresh look are a natural extension of this homespun décor with their fresh-picked-from-the-garden appeal.

Casual Chic

Casual living lifestyles focus on the simple pleasures of life. The decor includes furniture of light pine, natural woods, bleached oak or a white-washed painted finish with fabrics of linen and cotton in neutral tones. Sleek and trendy, the modern home calls for clean lines, smooth surfaces and form. Elegant fabrics, colorful silks, gauze or leather accent steel, glass and other man-made materials. Bold, exotic flowers (anthuriums, heliconia, callas, orchids) with strong lines work well to complement this home's clean, open spaces. To complete the dramatic look, flowers are best displayed in glass vases, decorative pottery and metallic containers with pewter or stainless steel finishes.

Velvets, satins, chintz, lace and organza create a feeling of softness and romance in the Victorian home. Pastel colors or soft tone-on-tone prints are used to delight the senses. Fragrant flowers (roses, spray roses, peonies, lavender, gardenias, freesia) in pale peach, lavender, pink, yellow and cream conjure images of romance and sensuality. All of these delicious colors glow in lovely, romantic vases of clear glass, crystal and silver.

Through Twitter we've met a wonderful company, called 1 cup Cotton. They make beautiful gifts made of towels and or baby clothes for various gift giving occasions. Congratulations to the many associates instrumental in receiving this honor!

On May 15th an exhibit opened featuring Anchor Hocking and showcasing Gay Fad Studios. I attended the opening evening's event. Here I met former employees of Anchor Hocking, viewed portraits of I.J. Collins and other crucial leaders from the past and saw the very first sales record book dating back to 1905. The group from The Ohio Glass Museum did an excellent job collecting data, images and archival pieces of Anchorware.

"The exhibit will feature Anchor Hocking items from the morgue of the Anchor Hocking; collections of Verylene Summers, of the Summer House Antiques; our own museum archives; and a very few area collectors. These glass creations and other artifacts will tell the great story of Anchor Hocking's positive incluence on, and enormous contribution to, our community for the past 105 years." -- The Ohio Glass Museum

The show also displayed pieces of Gay Fad glassware, which is also from Lancaster, Ohio.

"Fran Taylor decorated wastebaskets and glass items in Detroit beginning in 1939. She moved her business to Lancaster in 1945 so it would be central to the glass industry. For the next 18 years Gay Fad Studios was one of the best known and most prolific glass decorating companies in the country. A large selection of items from Gay Fad historian and collector, Dr. Donna McGrady, of Indiana, will be featured in this exhibit, along with contributions of area collectors." -- The Ohio Glass Museum

While out and about in the Short North area of Downtown Columbus I stumbled upon some wonderful creations in Collier West. As usual Suzi West has presented an extraodinary display of collections and art objects to dazzle the eye.

This time I saw something that was most definitely Anchor Blog material. A female metal artist, Jan Barboglio, has a captivating assortment of creations. One of which is a casserole holder which comes with a piece of Anchorware. Barboglio's holder can be snagged for a mere $148.00, but is well worth it for the metal art enthusiast.

I was really at The North Market to pick up fresh flowers, but Bubbles Tea & Juice Company's tasty samples lured me in. In case you're wondering I wound up buying a delicious mango smoothie concoction.

The thing I love most about this place is the way they seal your cup. They use a special sealing process and provide a straw with a pointed end. You stab the plastic lid and you're on your way. This is perfect for The North Market shopper who is in a hurry or has their hands full.

This year a team of Anchor Hocking’s co-workers, friends and family joined over 50,000 people participating in the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure. Anchor Hocking’s main headquarters are located just outside of Columbus, OH. A member of the sales and marketing team put together a group, over 50 members strong, for the event. Anchor has also supported the breast cancer cause with inspiring products, including the Hope Mug and Hope Double Wall with a pink lid. In addition, the bakeware line supports the cause with a pink lidded Batter Bowl and ribbon shaped cookie cutter, pink 16oz Measuring Cup and pink 5oz Measuring Glass all available through seasonal retail promotions in the fall.

AK and I had the excellent opportunity to speak to “Jadite Kate” on the phone.

She started collecting glass before she went to college, about 5 years ago. Her collection started with Jane Ray pieces from Anchor Hocking’s Fire-King. Since then, her collection has expanded from a few pieces of ware to an Etsy store that is celebrated by collectors and other bloggers.

Kate loves the colors of Jade-ite and the translucent mix between the greens of these vintage Fire-King pieces.

Restaurant ware is a personal favorite of hers as it is simple and holds up well. She uses Jade-ite as everyday ware, putting it to good use instead of collecting dust. Her kitchen cupboards are just chock full of dinner plates and Jade-ite mugs.

She sticks to glass for her Jade-ite collection, although she does have a well preserved box that came with one of her deviled egg dishes. Many people collect old advertisements and packaging from Fire-King wares, but they are often difficult to find in good condition.

Kate’s 92 year old grandmother was the inspiration for her vast collection and charming Etsy shop. It all started with the Jade-ite batter bowl that her grandmother used, it was a Jane Ray pattern. Her mother is also a lover of glass, collecting Jeannette and Fostoria pieces. Three generations of women, all with a knack for classic glassware.

We asked Kate if there were any heart-warming stories she could share with us. She brought up that she once had a customer who’s mother had received a specific piece as a wedding gift in the 1950’s. For years her mother was too afraid to damage the piece with use. The customer found a matching piece at Jadite Kate’s Etsy shop and purchased it. Now the customer’s mother can use the new piece and cherish the wedding gift without fear.

Some of Kate’s most common requests from her customers are batter bowls and Jade-ite mugs. Cups and saucers are often purchased as birthday and mother’s day gifts.

Kate loves the “treasure hunt” aspect of hunting for these timeless pieces at antiques stores/shows and flea markets. She just recently went on a road trip to Brimfield, Massachusets to look for wares, which she talks about in her blog.

As you may know from the blog my favorite item is Anchor’s Heritage Hill jar, but that has recently changed. After coming across the candy store in San Francisco, my new favorite Anchorware piece is now the Heritage Hill jar filled with candy!

The candy store is San Francisco's premier candy boutique and they have put on quite the display. The candy store has a full wall of Heritage Hill jars filled with delicious treats! In addition to the Heritage jars, they have shelves full of Anchor’s Penny Candy Jars filled to the top with goodies! Not only do they offer a huge selection of jars filled with candy to pick from, but they are also home to a stock pile of the finest chocolates from around the world.

Even though the candy store is located in Russian Hill area of San Francisco, they offer a range of gift boxes for on-line ordering that can be shipped out to curb that sweet tooth craving or as a gift. The candy store also features a blog discussing their, news, events and delicious thoughts.

Anchor Hocking has been making glass since 1905, so you can imagine there are quite a few wonderful items out there that have become adored by antique collectors. One talented artist saw the need to help people show off their collections in a unique way, where they wouldn't be packed up into boxes in the attic or in a drawer hidden away. We found Lin Glore on Etsy at Artful Folk.

I contacted Lin in awe of the excellent handiwork. She explained how her work began, "We all have family stories that have been forgotten. Grandmom's dishes have been packed away so they don't become damaged, but they aren't appreciated, either in a box in the attic. We don't use the special cuts in the glass, the textures, the rich colors too much anymore. We don't have the precision and fine craftsmanship of well-done stained glass in the Tiffany style anymore, either. These magnificent plates cry out to be admired. To marry these two pieces of our past has become my passion. To bring a bit of our heritage, our traditions to a new generation is rewarding and heartwarming."

Lin has some wonderful stories of her customer's commissioned works, "I met a woman at a show who was charged with the task of "door prizes" for her family reunion. She had her grandmother's set of depression glass that her mother had packed away for safekeeping."

Lin created eight custom panels from the heirloom pieces. The family was moved to tears and spent the rest of the get together telling stories of days gone by.

What a wonderful day to shop for flowers and other gardening goodies! The perfect place to find great plants in Columbus, is Baker's Acres Concrete Jungle. The Concrete Jungle is located in the Short North area of downtown Columbus. What a concept - amidst all the cement and metal and brick emerges a beautiful and friendly greenhouse!

"AK" told me I ought to stop by and check out what they were doing with Anchorware. So I popped in and found a variety of our storage jars being used as terrariums! One of the great things about the downtown area of Columbus, Ohio, is the diversity in establishments. A common stop of mine is the local Three Dog Bakery.

I love taking my black lab for walks in the Short North area and making a stop at this bakery. Upon going to the store, without her in tow, I took the time to realize that they actually use Anchor Heritage Hill Jars to store treats on the counter!

We think this jar is the perfect choice for such a display. The lid keeps dust out and not having a seal makes it easy for shoppers to make their selection. What’s even better is that they’ve utilized the many sizes the jar comes in! They can use smaller jars for fragrances they sell less of, or are low in stock on and vise versa.

I had the opportunity to ask Debbie from Party Perfect a few questions.

Anchor: What is your favorite part of party planning?
Party Perfect: Our favorite part of party planning is watching the vision come to life. Usually we spend close to a year planning an event with a client and seeing how everything comes together from conception to the final execution is really astounding and incredibly gratifying.

Anchor: How long have you been doing this?
Party Perfect: My partner Laura and I have officially been in business a little over two years, but before Party Perfect came to life, we were planning our own events and helping friends with parties and Mitzvahs.

Anchor: Can you give a quick tip adding a touch of class to a party?
Party Perfect: I think the best way to add a touch of class to a party is to personalize it. Do something that has some relevance to the guest of honor: make a candy bar with favorite candies and personalized signage or create a logo to use throughout the party (on napkins, give-away bags, dj screens, etc) to help "brand" the event.

We've found our jars being used as terrariums! Will Kalif shows his readers how to create their own miniature landscapes. He has a special section where he focuses on using apothecary jars for smaller tabletop versions.

This crafty blogger, Lisa from Memory Makers, has the right idea to keep her loose ends in check. She makes sure nothing gets wasted by collecting all of her ribbon scraps in one of our Heritage Hill Jars!

The Heritage Hill Jar is a common subject in our blog because so many people find it useful. The best thing about Heritage Hill is that it is all glass so it matches every type of decor.

An easy way to do this is bringing in a small plant or two. We've found that Anchor employees have some pretty innovative planter solutions. They love using Anchor glass because of its natural and eco-friendly qualities. Even more so, they love using things in new and different ways to create conversation and spur ideas.

Using two of our Contemporary Bowls for a planter. You could do this and put small decorative items between the small and large bowl, like rocks, buttons, scrabble pieces or vintage trinkets.

I have a black lab, Gracie, with a hearty appetite. Her food gets stored in a 2 gallon Heritage Hill Jar. This way no one has to see the gigantic yellow dog food bag in our little kitchen.

Gracie took advantage of the rare moment that her food and treat jars were open and unattended.

Ingredients
1 ounce Irish cream liqueur
1 ounce Frangelico
1 ounce Kahlua
5 ounces hot coffee
Whipped cream, for garnish
Green sanding sugar, for garnish (optional)

Directions
Place Irish cream, Frangelico, and Kahlua in a coffee mug; pour over coffee. Top with whipped cream and sanding sugar, if desired.

I am always looking for new and interesting things to do on Sunday afternoons. Recently, I came across this great recipe from Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer, John Kessler, for pickling tomatoes to make tomolives.

The online article by Angie Mosier, from Atalanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, included a photo by Brian Woodcock of pickled tomatoes stored in an Anchor Montana Jar and an Anchor Cookie Jar. Yet another great use for Anchorglass. I personally love both those jars for different reasons. The cookie jar has a classic shape and is all glass all American made in Ohio. The Montana jar has a great sealing lid and the polished metal is very stylish on your kitchen counter.

Ingredients:
1 quart green cherry tomatoes or quartered large green tomatoes
1/2 bunch dill (about 6-8 stems)
1 or 2 hot peppers, such serrano or habanero (if you are brave) sliced in half (optional)
1/2 cup cider vinegar
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
5 large cloves garlic, peeled and thickly sliced

Directions:
Stem the tomatoes and pierce each at the stem end with a
thin chopstick or skewer. Place in a clean, heat-proof quart Mason jar.
Top with the whole dill sprigs and optional pepper.

Bring 11/2 cups water, vinegar, salt, pepper and garlic to a boil.
Pour the hot liquid over the tomatoes to submerge. Stir the dill and
garlic pieces into the jar a bit.
Cover and let come to room temperature.
Store overnight in the refrigerator.

*For a recipe like this that is basically spicing a vegetable - instead of using a mason jar, think outside of the box and reach for a large Anchor jar.

This month we'll be headed to the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago. This is a very busy time of year for us, as we get ready to show off our newest and greatest anchorware.

Our tastes in beverages are also branching out.Wine and beer tastings are more popular than ever and even the smallest groceries are working hard to bring variety to their shelves. While some view this as wonderful, others (like me) are slightly overwhelmed by the presentation of options. If I make it proudly home with a selection, I then become overwhelmed with figuring out the best way to serve my offerings. What is the perfect beverage to accompany the perfect meal? How do you serve the perfect beverage to bring out the flavors as the brewers and sommeliers intended?

Let’s start very basic. First, if there is a particular wine that you love no matter what the meal, by all means drink it! Wine tasting and pairings should be an enjoyable experience and what you end with should be based on your own tastes and preferences so experiment away! The following suggestions are just that: suggestions based on which wines will bring out the best in a given food and vice versa. Test them out for yourself to see what works with your palate. Also, as a general rule, in the same way you start a meal with lighter, more delicate tastes (in appetizers and salads) and work your way towards the hearty/heavier, you do the same with wine – working from light to dark. Reds go nicely with heavier foods and aren’t normally served with appetizers.

The Basics
White Wine
Most common white wines:
Chardonnay: most popular white wine variety, dry white wine in a range of flavors: buttered, oak, fresh fruit

Pinot Grigio: crisp, dry white wines with smooth overtones

Sauvignon Blanc: light- to medium-bodied white wine that is crisp and refreshing with a range of flavors

Riesling: dry to sweet, light to full-bodied, very fresh in taste and versatile in food pairings. Typically apple, peach, pear, and floral undertones

Paired best with: appetizers, soft cheeses, fish, seafood, chicken, pork, and pasta with white sauce

Red Wine
Most common red wines:
Cabernet Sauvignon: big, full bodied and tannic, one of the best varieties in California

Merlot: medium bodied – i.e. less tannins than the Cabernet Sauvignon, berry/plum/currant flavors

Pinot Noir: medium to light bodied with a soft tannic structure

Syrah/Shiraz: typically fruity flavors with a hint of pepper and spices

Zinfandel: wide range, from big and hearty to light and delicate

Paired best with: strong cheeses, red meat, pork, beef, pasta with red sauce, and chocolate

Cheese
Both wine and cheese are natural products aged to perfection, so maybe that is why they go so well together!! White wine tends to go better with softer cheeses and red wine can go with harder/stronger cheeses, but we can all be the judge of that.

If you are new to exploring wine, I highly recommend visiting wineries for wine tasting, or even hosting or attending a wine party – have each guest bring one or two bottles of their favorite wine for everyone to taste test. You can’t go wrong with good wine, good food, and great company!

We set out on a journey to Paris, France. Our goal was to explore trends, fashion, design and culture. During our visit we attended the Maison & Objet show, which is always sure to please. Flourishing color, vibrant patterns or cultural influences on design were everywhere we looked. Our exploration led us to new materials, textures and color palettes that aren't typical in the states.

On this trip we went outside of the box, allowing our minds and eyes to wander beyond just housewares. We found inspiration in just about everything, be it a window display of couture fashion or new ways to create furniture. No stone was left unturned as we treked the city visiting shops, cafes, eateries and historical sites.

This trip was something to remember. Paris is full of all the images you see in art history books, and seeing those things in person can bring a person to speachlessness.

Recently, I was at a resale shop in the Columbus downtown area and found these vintage British bird book plates someone was selling and the notion of vintage birds got me thinking how that would be an excellent decorated glass.
Here are a few finds that caught my eye while I was looking up vintage birds. Looks like a few people are selling real vintage bird illustrations and nick knacks on Etsy. I also was amazed to find the number of retro styled vintage bird art that was being talked about on blogs.
Lastly, I was even more surprised to find that Anchor used to make Fire-King milk glass bird coffee cups. A few others and myself headed to the archives and found the actual glasses and from there I set out recreating these little gems. But, I thought I would share my inspiration and I will keep you updated on the vintage birds.

Turquoise. Copper. Grass. Lilac. Storm. Neutrals.

The up and coming colors for 2010 are inspired by bold and recognizable hues from nature. Turquoise as the primary color, will be seen in varying hues often paired with the secondary color, copper.

All of these trend colors can easily be matched with warm earthy neutral tones.

As for color palettes, this year monochromatic and simple complimentary schemes are stealing the show. Copper is borderline red/orange so it can compliment both blues and greens. Turquoise and storm would also make a great monochromatic duo.

Try this great hot cocoa recipe from sunset.com:

Layer the ingredients for homemade cocoa in a jar, add a ribbon and a tag, and you have a simple but stylish gift. This mix will fill a 1-quart jar (12 servings), but if your containers are different sizes, just keep the ratio of ingredients constant. On the back of the tag, write: "Mix contents in a large bowl. For each serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mix in a mug and stir in 1 cup boiling water. Store remaining mix in airtight container."

Yield: Makes 1 quart mix or 12 servings hot cocoa

Ingredients
* 1 cup powdered milk
* 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips
* 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy

Preparation
Layer powdered milk, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, chocolate chips, and peppermint candy.

I was grocery shopping around Christmas time at Kroger and saw this display they created. That's an anchor stacking glass storage container. I am always amazed to find anchor product being used in a variety of ways.
